Dental Air Motors

There are two main types of dental motors – electric and air driven. When deciding on a motor it is worth considering a number of key attributes to ensure the motor meets your dental requirements.

Electric Motor:  In the case of the electric motor, key features including light, brushless vs brushed and motor size are worth considering in advance of purchase. Consideration should also be given to the application requirements as certain motors are more suitable to specific procedures including Restorative, Prophylaxis, Endodontics handpiece, Implantology and Oral Surgery.

Air Motor: With air motors, attributes such as water, light and connection type should be considered in advance of purchasing. Air motors are available with or without water, including the option of internal or external water. Air motors also have the option of light, which will depend on the current surgery unit configuration. Tubing connection is important and should always be confirmed before purchasing. Many options are available if you want to connect directly to existing swivel couplers, which are used by various dental handpiece manufacturers, or if you want to connect directly to the dental unit tubing, which will be either a Midwest or Borden connection.

Backup Motor: Air motors are also worth considering to have as a backup motor in the event of an unexpected motor failure or scheduled motor service. An air motor which can easily connect to your existing tubing or handpiece swivel connection can be put to use immediately and eliminate any interruption in surgery procedures.
